Even though it's been a rainy spring here on the West Coast (or should I say WET coast??), I feel confident that Spring is on the way! This time of year inspires me so much.....especially when all the little birds start to come back from their winter holiday and wake me up in the mornings with their sweet little chirps and whistles! Glass Line Magazine tutorial and new Classes!!

Hello Everyone!

Well I have certainly been a distracted blogger as of late. A lot has been happening and I will be posting more regularly now to keep you all informed on my newest beads, classes and other exciting, bead related news!

First of all, I have a new, 6 page tutorial on how I make my swan beads featured in the latest issue of Glass Line Magazine! You can purchase a copy through their website at www.hotglass.com (click the header of this post for a direct link to their website!).
I was delighted to see one of my beads featured on the cover and am thrilled with the look of the tutorial! I hope you really enjoy it.

Ok so I didn't go too far....just took a bit of a break from the studio this summer and fall! Things have been insanely hectic the past few years - all good stuff - just no downtime! So, in order to refuel my creative "think tank" I decided to give myself a rest. Now I'm refreshed, recharged and happily back in the studio once again! Well a Happy April Fools to all of you bead enthusiasts out there! Hopefully you've all avoided having someone play a prank on you or at least got some good ones in yourself! ;)

I've been busy in the studio once again and have some new goodies in the shop this week! Horses have been on my mind and I've been working on my shading techniques and horses are the perfect subject to "paint" in glass. I have a saucy palomino, a majestic buckskin and two ghostly greys in the herd today. Also some new ravens and my made to order beads sets are back!

Exciting News!

Oh my, where has the beginning of the year gone? Things have been hectic, but good! I've been traveling a fair bit lately teaching at some great studios such as Scarab Glassworks in California, Bedrock Supply in Edmonton and locally here at Andrighetti Glassworks in Vancouver! My next trip is to Calgary to teach at the Tiffany House Gallery in May.

Today I discovered a fun surprise while having my coffee and looking on the Bead Trends website....one of my favorite jewelry pieces has made the cover of the April issue! The best part of all, this special issue features my fabulous friend, Stephanie Dieleman as the Designer Highlight! You'll definitely want to check out this issue to see her gorgeous designs and beautiful beads!!

Stephanie and I have just finished the first Fraser Valley Bead Show (it was great!!) and are gearing up for our next local show....Bead Oasis in downtown Vancouver, BC, on March 26-28 at the Empire Landmark Hotel on Robson Street. http://www.oasisshows.com/Vancouver/2010/index.php

Well I hope you are all having a great start to the year! I've been spending time in the studio creating a few new pieces for the shop if you want to drop in to take a peek! Some of my new favorites are these two swans.....I have softly etched them so they feel like vintage porcelain cameos...so romantic!

I will be traveling a lot this year with teaching engagements, bead shows and a few holidays thrown in for good measure. In January, I'll be away from the 5th - 19th so all bead orders made on Jan 4th or later will be mailed out when I return. I have so much exciting news to share today! First of all, I can finally announce that my Raven / Landscape Tutorial is ready! I had to wait for the release of this tutorial for a special reason......this bead won the Grand Prize in the Annealer Magazine's "In Time for the Holidays Contest" and is featured on the cover of their Winter 2009 issue! In this issue is an abbreviated version of the tutorial for you but if you want the expanded version, you can purchase it in my Etsy store.

Feathered Friends....

For anyone that knows my work, you must know that I love birds! Here are some new feathered friends I want to share with you. First of all is a raven I call the Berry Thief. I love the colors in the backgroud - it's fun to work with enamels! I also have another heron with an intense gaze and also something new.....a cheeky chickadee!

And of course as promised....here are a few new Owl Babies too! Little Petunia and Sammy...enjoy!

Well it finally started snowing today! Not much - which I'm glad for - but a wee sprinkling of white stuff creating a light dusting that resembles powdered sugar over everything. So, back to the studio I go to keep warm by my toasty torch! Lately I've had some adorable little creatures come out of my kiln.....Owl Babies! I just adore making them as each has their own personality and attitude.

I would like to introduce you to Wilbur the Worrisome. He's a rather shy and somewhat nervous little fellow who is forever looking over his shoulder! He would make a wonderful little companion to sit by your computer or he can be wrapped into a pendant and worn as a sweet little necklace. Stay tuned for more of his friends making an appearance soon!

Howl at the moon!

Good morning my fellow bead enthusiasts!! I'm just about to head out to the studio this morning but wanted to talk about my latest bead listing......yes, another wolf! This is my favorite one so far and is quite a statement piece. This one I made with a horizontal hole so it can be worn on a chain for a simple pendant or wire-wrapped into a more elaborate necklace design. It could even be made into a chunky bracelet or would also look great on a leather cord for a pendant for a guy to wear!

I hope you are all having fun getting ready for the holidays....I still have a bit of Christmas shopping to do but I'm waiting until after the weekend - I'm not brave enough to tackle the mall on a Saturday in December!

Good Morning!

Well it's finally starting to happen.....snow! OK so it's not much - just a light sprinkling on the ground but I know it's a sign of things to come. So, in my efforts to keep warm I'm spending more time in my studio next to my toasty little torch. Here's what's coming out of the kiln lately.....a pack of wolves! This hairy beastie is singing his heart out to a full moon on a cold winter's night.

Heron Lake....

Yes, I still have birds on my mind lately......does that make me a bird brain I wonder???

Here's another majestic Blue Heron - this one strikes a pose along the shore of his favorite lake. Surrounded by water reeds and set against an enameled background with soft shades of blues and greens, this bead is one of my favorites so far!

And here is something new I just created by special request.....a Whooping Crane! I just adore these graceful birds and have plans to make more cranes over the next while, so stay tuned!

Good morning!! Well it's a chilly morning here in BC today - but the sun is going to shine, shine, shine! So far - NO snow!!!! Yay! Snow for me means a day of back-breaking shovelling to carve a path to my studio in the mornings so I'm thrilled I can "commute" to work without the shovel! lol!

The beautiful full moon we've had this past week and the bright blue skies we've been having have inspired my latest beads. Here is another heron awash in richly saturated enamels - oh how I love these colors! Frost-laden trees and a full moon add detail to this star-gazing heron.

I also have a cheeky raven who's prancing in the snow!

I've also listed another eagle with a strong gaze and ruffled feathers......set against an earthy background that resembles riverstone this focal is perfect for the eagle collector on your Christmas list!

I hope you are enjoying the season and finding beauty in every day!

I've been getting several requests for herons lately so here are a few new ones! I have been having fun with enamels again and love the way that they resemble watercolor paints and richly saturate the glass with color. By softly etching these beads, I get an almost porcelain - like effect which lends the beads a wonderful softness. These are perfect for the bird lover on your Christmas list!

I can't believe that November is almost over! Christmas is just around the corner and thankfully the snow is holding out for a bit. The sun is shining today and it's a beautiful warm day. Last year at this time we had mountains of snow! I'll keep my fingers crossed that we get this good weather a little longer....

Lately I've been out of the studio and focusing on getting my next two tutorials finished. I am releasing my new Landscape Raven Tutorial in the next week or so and my Honeybee tutorial will be released mid-December. These tutorials are coinciding with two magazines and I will write more about that when they hit the newsstands. Lots of exciting news!
In the meantime, here are some more ravens in the shop today - these two have gotten the last red berries of the season and are looking rather delighted with their finds!

Only 6 Weeks until Christmas!

Ok, so six weeks and a day......where oh where did this year go? It seems to have just flown by! Yesterday was such a warm and sunny day it was hard to believe it was the middle of November. Even though the snow is (thankfully) holding out for a bit, I'm still getting into the Christmas spirit! Just Horsin' Around in the Studio!

Even though the weather is dreary and that usually curbs my creative enthusiasm, I've been enjoying some time in the studio and having a little playtime as of late! Winter Ravens

While most people lament the end of summer, I am inspired by the crispness in the fall air and look forward to winter! I grew up on Silver Star Mountain in the interior of BC and one of my favorite things was to watch the magnificent trees turn color then see their stark beauty as their leaves blew away in the wind. There was always something magical about how the first frost clung to the trees in the early mornings and I loved it when the snow would start to fall and dust the ground like icing sugar.

I have just listed some new ravens that are inspired by the beauty of British Columbia in the winter. Stark landscapes of silvered pines covered in frost, bright full moons that illuminate the snow covered ground and of course, my ever present ravens strutting their stuff and claiming the last berries of the season!

my favorite Eagle!

I've had a lot of requests for eagles lately and since I haven't had a whole lot of time in the studio this past week, I decided to part with one I had planned to keep for myself. :) This is one of the beads I made after I had the visit from the pair of eagles that alighted on my neighbor's tree. They were just so magnificent that I made a few eagle beads after that day. This is one that I was especially pleased with and had planned on keeping for myself, but have decided to release into the world and see if he flies home to you. :)

Eagle Eye...

OH how I love birds, especially birds of prey! Last week I was walking across the lawn from my studio to the house and I heard a distinct cry. When I looked up, I saw a pair of bald eagles in one of the tall pines in my neighbors yard! While we do have eagles in our area, I've never seen one so close to my house before. I rushed in and grabbed my camera and captured a shot of one of the eagles that patiently posed for me. Oh for a better zoom lens!

Here is a special focal for the Queen Bee in your life - maybe it's you! :) Made on a base of royally rich red with a petite golden crown, I think this special bee would be adorable in a whimsical necklace or chunky bracelet. Oh how I love our feathered friends! Today I have something new to share.....a delicate cameo swan and an African Grey Parrot! The parrot was especially fun to to create even though all those little feathers were extremely time consuming. I really enjoyed creating him though and this just might lead to me trying other new bird beads in the near future.....stay tuned!

I seem to be on a color theme kick this week....yesterday it was blue and today I have some yummy green beads newly listed in the shop! From shimmery emerald green swirls on antique ivory, to the delightfully weathered look of copper green, there are enough shades of green here to delight the most avid nature lover!

Oh how I love blue! The blue of the ocean, the blue of the sky, the blue of twilight and the in-between.....no, I haven't been watching any vampire movies lately, but this little vial might appeal to a creature of the night!

Here are some new goodies in my store today, a deep cobalt blue vessel just perfect to hold a small amount of your favorite essential oil or perfume, fitted with a jeweled cork stopper. Also a colorful dragonfly who looks as though he is flying into an evening sky.....enjoy!

Collaboration is a great thing!

Well hello my beady friends! I know, I am a tardy and infrequent blogger (shame on me!) but I'm back on track and in the studio after a hectic year of bead shows and teaching engagements. All good stuff mind you!

Several months ago, I participated in a wonderful collaboration project called Convergence, that paired lampwork artists from the International Society of Glass Beadmakers (www.isgb.org) and jewelry designers from the Bead and Button readership around the globe. I was fortunate to be paired with the talented Melissa Cable who is the owner of Beadclub in Woodinville, Washington (www.beadclub.com) and the resulting creation has just been featured on page 16 in the newest special issue of Bead and Button magazine! This issue features 20 projects from the Convergence exhibit - if you haven't seen it yet better rush to get your copy! There are some amazing projects in there and they all look to be a lot of fun to create! So special thanks to Bead and Button magazine, the ISGB and my design partner, Melissa for making this wonderful project possible.

A weekend away.....

OK, so it's been over a week since I went to Vancouver Island for the Kitty Coleman Show, but thought that I should show some pics of the fabulous place we stayed at! We stayed at the newly renovated Bayside Beach House and it was absolutely gorgeous. That made it feel more like a vacation than a working weekend!

The artisan show at the Kitty Coleman Gardens was fun although a steady weekend of rain kept many of the locals at bay. The hard core art enthusiasts were there though, no amount of rain could keep them away! Stephanie and I were fortunate to have a nice spot under a sheltered area so we kept dry and managed to have a great time despite the rain.

The beach house was truly a delight and here are some photos of it in the early morning light. Simply lovely.

Woodland Gardens Artisans Festival this weekend!

Hello my fellow bead enthusiasts! Well, you may be wondering why I dropped off the face of the earth this summer! I've been busy enjoying time with my two fabulous step-daughters and also working on some great new beads and jewelry too in preparation for the Kitty Coleman Woodland Gardens Show on Vancouver Island this weekend! This is going to be a fun getaway with dear friends. My partner in crime, Stephanie Dieleman, will be sharing the booth and she has a fantastic assortment of her exquisite beach-themed jewelry! I'm very excited as a group of us are all renting a house on the beach and so I'm looking forward to some beachcombing and relaxing nights by the fire roasting marshmellows with our 4 teenage girls we are bringing along. I will be sure to post pictures of our last hurrah of summer when I return! :)

What a summer!

Whew! What a crazy summer it's been so far! I've hardly had a moment to sit at the computer this past month as you can probably tell by my lack of blog posts! Stephanie and I were in Miami last week for the ISGB Gathering and Bead Bazaar - what a blast!! Before that we were in Tacoma for the Puget Sound Bead Festival. In between shows was the usual insane hours at the torch making beads with barely a breather in between!

Now that August is here (my long awaited month at home!) I can devote more time to getting back into a semblance of a routine and spend some time creating new work in the studio and catching up on all of my email correspondence. Time for a big studio clean as well....it always looks like a bomb went off in there during show season! My studio is my own little piece of heaven though I must say, and now that I have installed air conditioning (a must have for the insane heat wave we've been experiencing here in the Pacific Northwest!) I can comfortably catch up on torch time without suffering from heat exhaustion.

As for what's coming up next.....more shows! Yes, Stephanie and I have booked ourselves into the BeadFest Portland show in late September! We've never done this show before and are really looking forward to it. We also have a wonderful little art show on Vancouver Island coming up at the beginning of September at the Kitty Coleman Gardens - if you are in the area this summer please take a look at my "shows" page for more info!

I have some new beads listed in my Etsy store as well.....a few horse portraits and some cheeky crows! I'll be listing a dragonfly later today and more new beads throughout the week so stay tuned!

Well, time to head back out to the studio....as much as I love traveling it's good to be home and back at the torch. :)

If you haven't yet checked out Bead Trends Magazine, I recommend you take a peek! This delicious new bead magazine has the feel of a book but is available on a monthly basis and is full of fabulous jewelry designs! Last month (June's issue), featured my friend Stephanie Dieleman's starfish necklace on the cover (www.stephaniebeads.com) and this month's issue we both have projects inside! Back from the Bead and Button Show!

Wow! What a trip! This year's Bead and Button Show was better than ever and I had a wonderful time. I went with my dear friends, Stephanie Dieleman (above)(www.stephaniebeads.com) and Kellie Sutton (www.kelliesutton.com) and the weekend was full of laughs, good times and of course, beads!

First of all, I have to brag about Stephanie who was our rock star at the show! Below is a photo of two magazines with her beads on the cover - Bead Trends and Belle Armoire Jewelry! I should get her to autograph my magazine copies before she gets any more famous!

I also have to brag about our dear friend and fellow Firefox - Debra Kallen (www.debrakallenart.com) as she won the first place ribbon in the bead category for the Bead Dreams Competition this year! Way to go, Deb! Look for her amazing box of chocolate beads and her Christmas necklace in Bead and Button Magazine coming up in the months ahead!

After the show, Kellie, Steph and I spent a day in Chicago - what an amazing city! Last year we went down the Magnificent Mile and this time we did a bit more sightseeing. We happened to have lunch right near the Sears Tower so of course we had to go up to take a peek! Look waaaaaay up girls!

The top 103rd floor was closed for renovations so we went to the 99th floor observation deck. The view was breathtaking! What amazed me the most is that this building was completed in 1973 - I was 3 years old then! lol! Ooops! Giving away my age here.....

And look who we bumped into in the gift shop at the bottom of the tower? Well hello Mr. President! It was so nice of him to pose for a photo with these crazy Canadian girls! lol!

Well those are a few highlights of the show - my next trip is back to Indiana to Inspired Fire Studio to take a class with the amazing Lucio Bubacco! Can't wait! oh - and in case you are waiting for me to list beads soon - stay tuned! I'm back at the torch and will list new beads over the weekend.

Well I have been really tardy with blog updates lately as I haven't had much time on the computer as of late! I've been a busy little bee in the studio creating as many last minute beads for the show as humanly possible! I always wish I had more beads than I do but I know this will be a fantastic show and I am excited to see the friends I made there last year. It will be a blast! One other thing I am excited about is to debut my new swan beads at the show this year. I just LOVE making them and hope they are popular so I can make more! My favorites are my "Storybook Swans" that have a cute little crown like the Swan Prince! I may do more fairy tale inspired beads in the future - so many ideas I want to try!!

So, if you are in Milwaukee for the show, drop by and say hello! My very talented friend, Stephanie Dieleman (www.stephaniebeads.com) will have her fabulous ocean beads there as well and we will be at booth #1157 - same as last year! I have always loved history....especially early history - Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Medieval periods fascinate me. Looking back on the art, sculpture and architecture of those periods I am amazed at what those civilizations accomplished without the use of the technology and power we have today. I have been enjoying exploring new subjects on my beads as of late - horses being one of them. This particular horse I call "Varro" who is inspired by the powerful classical bronze and marble statues created during the Roman Empire. The powerful way they depicted their horses tells us what an important role they played in daily life and in the growth of a civilization. What could be more inspiring than that?

Well I can't believe that spring is finally here! It's been a hectic past few months with trips to Indiana, Disneyland and Miami to name just a few. Needless to say I have been terribly tardy in updating my blog. That said, I do have something to share that I am very excited about! I have been spending a bit of time between trips in the studio revisiting and refining some bead styles I truly adore. While I love all animals, I have always had a special spot in my heart for horses. I was fortunate to have several ponies and horses as a child and spent many wonderful summers with the horses we raised on our farm. Up until recently I have had horses but find myself too busy with my travels to devote as much time to them as I would like. So, I am indulging myself on a little "horse kick" in the studio and coming out with some equine inspired portraits! I will be adding more horse bead photos to my gallery this week and listing some new horse beads on Etsy in the weeks ahead. I hope you will drop in again soon to take a peek!

Swans are almost magical creatures, the way they float so effortlessly across the pond, their graceful stance and their soft white feathers make them seem like out of a fairy tale........... Here is a swan focal bead that reminds me of the watercolor illustrations in the fairy tale books I loved as a child. Enjoy!

OK, so I know it's still February and there is snowfall across the continent still, but here in BC the sun has been shining for days and the weather is practically balmy! Petite crocus flowers are wiggling out of the earth and the air is full of birds playing in the sun. Feels like spring to me! Looking forward to the warmer months ahead, I am dreaming of the dragonflies that hum across the pool in summer........here is a bright and cheerful dragonfly - with many more to come soon!

I have just returned from a fun-filled and sunny week in Arizona! I was there for a medieval event called Estrella War and had a wonderful time. The sun was shining almost every day and it's easy to see why so many Canadians fly south for the winter...I may be one of them in the future! This dragonfly bead has a background of fine silver foil encased with soft shades of amber and amethyst glass and has the same colors as those marvelous Arizona desert mountains! I'm looking forward to going back next year!

For your Goddess within.........

I have been having so much fun in the studio lately revisiting a bead style that I haven't made in years........goddesses! When I first started making beads about 8 years ago, goddesses were among the first beads I made. I love sculpture and the human form is one of the most lovely things to sculpt! Looking back at my earlier goddesses, there is a dramatic difference to the ones I am creating now. I am finding that my recent goddess beads are more curvy, sensual and realistic than before. Whereas my earlier goddesses were more of a tribute to "Barbie" - with sculpted abs and long and lean figures, these goddesses are more classic in form and have a softer, more mature beauty - rounder, fuller and reflect the natural beauty that evolves with time and a life well lived. I will be posting more in the next while and would love to hear what you think!

Vintaj jewelry design contest!

I can't believe that January is almost half over! Where does the time go? I have to say, that I had a great start to the New Year! On Jan 1st I heard that 4 of my jewelry designs were accepted for publication in the new bead magazine, Bead Trends! It's a beautiful little magazine that looks like a book and I'm proud to have my work featured in it. Also, I entered a blog contest with the brass jewelry finding company, Vintaj, and won one of their necklace kits! Not a bad start to the year! lol! I really like the Vintaj company and have started to order some of their brass findings to go with my beads. They are lovely and have such a rich patina which I adore! I also just entered another of their design contests for which I created a dragonfly necklace using large quartz crystals and a few of my favorite pieces from their collection. I call it "Winter Flight" and it's # 17 on the blog page. While this necklace does not feature any of my beads, it was still incredibly fun to make! At Year's End.......

I can't believe that the end of 2008 is actually upon us. Looking back, this has been a year full of amazingly exciting events and the toughest of challenges as well! I have learned a lot over the course of these adventures, and feel decidedly blessed to have the life I lead and the freedom to follow my passion each and every day. As I write this, the sun is shining, the snow is melting, and I am getting ready to head out to the studio and flex my creative muscles at the torch! I'm excited to wake up each day and get to work - because my work is play to me and I love every single moment of it! I want to thank each and every one of you who has collected my beads over the course of the year, or simply sent me a note or took the time to drop by my bead booth at one of my shows and say hello! It's because of you that I do what I love to do each day and I couldn't do it without you!

I hope the year ahead brings you all of the things your heart desires, and inspired moments of creative joy that make each day something to look forward to!

Too much snow!

Well I guess lately I haven't been living up to the title of my blog........"the daily bead!" lol! Ah well, it's been a hectic holiday season and here on the west coast of BC we've had record amounts of snow the past few weeks. I spent Christmas Day shoveling a path to the studio and was so exhausted by the time I got there that I spent the day on the couch - no energy for beads! Oh well, it was nice to have some much needed down-time and I'm happily back at the torch again and rejoicing in the warmer weather that has arrived to help melt all this white stuff.

Yesterday was so beautifully sunny that I had hopes of an early Spring.........wishful thinking, I know! But with those bright and cheery thoughts I found myself making honeybees again! They always make me happy and even though they are quite challenging to make, they are a lot of fun. So, you will be seeing a few more of these happy little guys in my Etsy store and I hope they make you think of warmer days to come!

Canadian Bears

Oh how I love bears! Grizzly bears, polar bears and my all time favorite - black bears! I grew up on a mountain in the interior of BC called Silver Star Mountain. We lived in several places on that mountain and at one point, we lived in a large cabin on 40 acres of which about half was densely wooded forest. As kids, my brother and I would play along the trails and always had to keep a look out for our shy yet curious neighbors - the black bears. They would often wander up to the house, looking to see what offerings we had left them (in the disguise of a garbage can which they perceived as a gift basket) so seeing them was a regular occurence. How I miss seeing the babies in the spring - although when we did we had to make a bee-line in the opposite direction as babies meant that a momma bear was not far behind!

This little curious bear bead is a tribute to my enchanted childhood and all the wonderful bears that still live on Silver Star Mountain.......

Tapestry Beads

A few years ago I started making beads with delicate vine scrollwork inspired by late medieval and early victorian tapestries. I love the ornate look of vintage fabrics and the scrollwork that edged the pages of medieval manuscripts. I use this tapestry design on many of my beads and love the way it looks on it's own or as the backdrop for my dragonflies, ravens and other creatures I depict on my beads. Well, I am finally working on a tutorial that will explain the techniques I use to create my little tapestry beads and other beads too! Hopefully in about a week or so I will have the first tutorial available in my Etsy shop......stay tuned!

In ancient times, glass was a rare and coveted commodity. It was valued as much as precious stones, for it's color, rarity and for the skill which was necessary to produce it. In ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, glass was used to imitate some of the most precious stones of the day ........turquoise, lapis and agate to name a few. The reason I am writing about the fascinating topic of glass history is because when I took this bead out of the kiln, I was delighted with the mottled colors and stone-like effect I was able to achieve. Once I etched this bead it had the soft weathered feel of something older, something precious......and I wondered that even though our advances in glass seem so astounding, why often the biggest thrill can come from such a simple achievement.

For the love of Red........

RED! What a glorious color and good for anytime of year - from candy apples in summer to the fire-red hues of maple trees in autumn, red is also one of the hallmark colors of Christmas. Is it because it brings a touch of warmth at such a chilly time of year? Or is it because of Santa, Poinsettias and the ripe red of holly berries? All good reasons to enjoy a touch of red in my opinion!

Oh how I tried to make a holiday bead this year - but this is as far as I got. My favorite red and one of my favorite themes - dragonflies - all rolled into one big and bold focal bead. OK, so I did manage a few little bead sets and things in red too - I just love this color! But no distinctly classic holiday themes for me this year. Well, maybe if you look closely you'll see some hints of mistletoe leaves in there somewhere............;)

A Honey of a Bead!

This happy little bee is displayed against a soft antique ivory background and is surrounded by my tapestry scrollwork which also wraps around to the back of this ornate bead. I simply adore honey bees and I hope my little bee beads will help bring awareness to the plight of this amazing little creature.

Raven's Pearl

I love how ravens and crows covet shiny, precious things! I seem to have a lot in common with them.......
This is one of the largest raven beads I have ever done and I love the way it turned out! Over 50mm long, this bead is definitely a statement piece. Holding a precious pearl in his claw, he seems particularly delighted with his find! I wonder what other treasures he has collected.........?

Heron's Moon

Here is another heron that I am very pleased with. Gazing up at the full moon against a midnight sky, this is my version of a watercolor painting done with molten glass! I have been playing with enamels and love the way I can achieve dappled layers of color with them. I have always wanted to paint with watercolors and it's even more fun to be able to "paint" with a flame!

Ravens

Ravens are one of my favorite birds that I depict on my beads.....they are such characters! Ravens are featured in many myths throughout the world - they are linked to creation, the afterlife, are said to foretell the future and are also known to be tricksters.
This bead I called "The Trickster". Set against a haunting forest background inspired by our Canadian winters, this raven looks over his shoulder to laugh at the moon -who knows what mischief he will be up to before the dawn?

New beads to show today! I'm very excited about the herons and have been having fun lately exploring the theme. I have also been working on swans..........this is my first and is in my Etsy store! The backgrounds of these beads are achieved with the use of enamels melted right onto the bead. I love how they look a bit like watercolor paintings......... enjoy!

Here we are at the end of November already and Christmas is just around the corner! Where did this year go? It's been a blur, really although for the most part a pretty terrific year! I have been very busy in the studio once again after taking a bit of time off since the middle of October. No more shows now until the New Year so I can focus on getting some new beads done for my Etsy store and catch up on orders. Here is a theme I am revisiting as of late......herons! These were made for a gallery called the Upstart Crow, in Ladner. I was so happy with how they turned out that I am making more and will have them available in my Etsy store this week! Other new designs coming soon as well as more ravens too! Also..........I'm working on my first tutorial! More to be revealed soon.........shhhhhhhhhh! ;)

Autumn delights........

Ahhh I LOVE fall! The rich colors, the cool crisp air and my favorite fall ritual of all..........the Fraser Valley Bead Show! This show is very close to my heart - I have been a vendor since it first started 5 years ago and it's almost in my backyard - right in downtown Langley! Only a few days away and I am doing my typical last minute scramble to fill my table with an abundance of new beads - no matter how hard I try to prepare ahead of time, I am always beading up a storm right before the show! Ah well, each year this show is more exciting than the last and the girls and I have some fun new surprises in store so I hope if you are in town this weekend, that you will drop in and say hello!

a busy summer!

Have you ever gotten to a point where you are just toooooo busy? I've been feeling like that all spring and summer! I'm not complaining, mind you. This has been a fabulous year and the wonderful opportunities coming my way have all been too good to pass up! The Bead and Button Show was amazing, and I'm so glad I went. Shortly thereafter I took a 3 day class with Andrea Guarino (which I highly, highly recommend!) then it was off to the Puget Sound Bead Festival in Tacoma last weekend. Whew! That's a lot of travel for lil' 'ol me! I'm now trying to stay put for a bit and focus on getting some beads made and just enjoy being at home for a while. That said, there is one more trip just around the corner..........this August I am going to the Gathering in Oakland, California! "What is the Gathering", you ask? Well, it's the annual educational conference for ISGB (International Society for Glass Beadmakers) members and is held in a different location each year. I have wanted to go for ages but they are generally in far off places beyond the scope of my little travel comfort zone. This year however, it's just a hop, skip and a jump away in northern California. The main reason I am attending though, is because I have been asked to teach a demo on one of my dragonfly beads! Such an honor to be asked and too good of an opportunity to miss! Not just an opportunity to "get my name out there" a bit, but more of an opportunity to meet some of the most amazing bead makers from around the world that I have admired for sooooo long!
So here is a photo of my humble little bead that I will demo to these illustrious beadmakers.....I hope they get a little something useful out of my presentation and that I'm able to make them smile!:)

Home from the Bead and Button Show!

Hello and welcome to my new blog! I have to confess that I am very new at this but hope that my little musings are somewhat entertaining and helpful in updating you with what is new in and around my life and studio.

I have just returned from the Bead and Button Show in Milwaukee (my first time there) and I had the time of my life! My fellow booth mates (Stephanie Ann and Michelle Lusk) and I had a blast and we are excited to return to the show next year. We met the most fantastic people and many adventures befell us at the show - most of them good and all exciting! One thing I was not prepared for was the weather. Multiple tornado warnings with several "lock ins" happening on the show floor. Not a bad place to be "stuck" during a storm and I'm sure all the beads helped keep our fabulous customers calm! lol! Hopefully next year will favor us with some sunshine but I'm bringing my ruby slippers with me - just in case!

The purpose of my blog (if, indeed, a blog needs a purpose), is to share with you my inspirations, newest work and upcoming shows and events I will be at. I rarely journal on paper so you may also get some rambling thoughts that spill from my ever creative mind as well as perhaps some photos of my studio or of my beloved dogs who keep me company there.
